Personal Appearance Service Licence, Inspections & Future Trends

What to expect when you’re expecting… Personal Appearance Service Licence (PAS) Inspectors! Our insider experience and a ‘heads up’ to businesses – we thought you’d like to know, particularly if you’re in Queensland.

Two groups of council Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) recently attended the THink Aesthetics Emporium clinic for training demonstrations. They came from all across Queensland. Discussions included industry challenges for cosmetic tattooing, now and going forward. The training course was conducted by Environmental Health Australia, who were recommended to approach THink to assist in treatment and procedure demonstrations by Brisbane City Council.

Some key messages from this experience:

  • Inspectors are being trained in auditing techniques and collecting evidence to ”prosecute illegal operators” (best to know now)
  • First course of its kind, intended to teach EHOs to do Personal Appearance Service licence inspections for skin penetration
  • Portable sinks – some councils are now saying plumbed-in sinks are required (e.g. Gold Coast)
  • All Queensland councils represented said HLTINF005 infection control qualification,  and predecessors (HLTINF2A, 402B and 402C) are now required for a PAS licence (you still need SHBBINF001 for accredited cosmetic tattoo training)
  • One council is now conducting ‘raids’ on premises with police and search warrants (yikes!)

Protect yourself with the correct licenses and qualifications

It is important to note

You may not be covered by your insurance company if you do not have this Council Licence. It is a legal requirement in Queensland.

(We’ve attached some of ours below!)

HLTINF005 Maintain Infection Prevention & Skin Penetration Identify, manage and control infection risks to others.

Council Approval – Personal Appearance Service Licence Approval for ‘higher risk’ services (e.g. Cosmetic Tattooing).
