Tech Talk #54: Skin health and cosmetic tattooing
The skin. The largest organ of the body. Yes, it renews itself, but it is also easily damaged. It is the amazing canvas for cosmetic tattooing: brows, lips, eyeliner, scalp micropigmentation, nipple areola complexes, etc.
In this Tech Talk, we will cover:
- Understanding the skin
- Skin health & PMU removal
- Skin education for cosmetic tattoo
Understanding the skin for Cosmetic Tattooing
How well do you understand the skin? Do you know the difference between the papillary dermis and the reticular dermis? The difference between a macrophage, a melanocyte, and a Merkel cell?

Understanding the skin is essential to maintaining client skin health, and keep clients coming back for colour boosts, maintenance and additional treatments.
Old style microblading damaged the reputation of the industry. Blades cut through the skin layers and penetration depths were hard to control. Technicians found that three microblading procedures was enough to create unworkable scar tissue.
Skin health & PMU removal
Removal became a vital part of any cosmetic tattooist’s treatment menu. The ability to remove patchy and/or blurred microblading became the difference between securing a client and turning them away. Saline removal often did more damage than microblading. Laser removal became better as technology improved but can still cause scarring and hair loss. Glycolic-based removal systems have advantages, and the skin and well formulated glycolic acid are the best of friends. Glycolic acid can break down scar tissue and remove cosmetic tattoo pigment. THink Pigment Remover does both.
