Tech Talk #47: Restoring Confidence with Areola Tattooing
Restoring Confidence with Areola Tattooing
With October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we believe it’s important to recognise not only the strength of those who have experienced breast cancer, but also the ways in which cosmetic tattooing can support their journey to healing and self-confidence.
For many who have undergone breast surgery, 3D areola tattooing can be a significant step in the healing process, both physically and emotionally. At THink Aesthetics we believe it is important to help anyone who has experienced breast cancer and this Tech Talk is dedicated to empowering other cosmetic tattooists who want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their clients.
In this Tech Talk we’re covering:
- What makes 3D areola tattooing unique
- The importance of pigments and safety
- What you need to know before you start
What makes it different?
3D areola tattooing isn't simply about perfect strokes or crisp lip borders, but rather creates form through artistic techniques such as shading, creating depth, and colour theory. Many technicians work freehand, which means your artistic eye is just as important as your technical skill.
Things to consider before an areola tattooing
Not every client will be ready for areola tattooing straight away. Here are some key factors to check before proceeding:
- Healing time: Typically wait at least 12 months after initial reconstructive surgery.
- Skin condition: Scar tissue or radiated skin can take pigment differently.
- Medical clearance: Should be obtained in writing from the client's doctor.
With areola tattooing, even more so than any other cosmetic tattooing, a treatment plan should be formed around the client’s unique circumstance, guidance from their medical team, and their own journey. It is a rewarding treatment to be able to offer, but it comes with a few more things to navigate.
Why specialised training is essential
You can’t approach areola tattooing the same way as cosmetic brows or lips. It involves advanced technical and medical knowledge: understanding scarred skin, extra infection control precautions (particularly for post-care), client consultation, and a heavy emotional journey alongside treatment. With the right training, you’ll not only create realistic results but also give your clients something truly life-changing. Technical knowledge will help guide your artistic journey when you begin stepping into the areola and paramedical space.
It is worth noting the current highest recognised qualification in Australia, the Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing, offers 3D Nipple Areola as a specialisation area alongside Brows, Lips, Eyeliner and Scalp Micropigmentation.
The pigments matter
Because these tattoos are done on delicate, often compromised skin, a quality pigment choice is essential. Your pigment range should be designed for Areola use, and be EU REACH approved, as they’re formulated and checked to be free from harmful ingredients. And as always, only mix within the same colour range/line! Keeping the results more predictable is key.
Specialised in-depth training and specially formulated pigments are key, alongside a keen eye for artistry to create realistic results for your clients.
